Arkansas CDL License Classes and Requirements
Arkansas issues three classes of Commercial Driver's License (CDL) in accordance with federal FMCSA regulations. Each class authorizes operation of different vehicle types and weight categories.
Class A CDL
A Class A CDL allows you to operate combination vehicles with a gross combination weight rating (GCWR) of 26,001 pounds or more, where the towed vehicle weighs more than 10,000 pounds. This includes tractor-trailers, truck and trailer combinations, and livestock carriers.
Class B CDL
A Class B CDL permits operation of single vehicles with a GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more, or vehicles towing another vehicle not exceeding 10,000 pounds. This includes straight trucks, large buses, and segmented buses.
Class C CDL
A Class C CDL is required for vehicles designed to transport 16 or more passengers (including the driver) or vehicles transporting hazardous materials requiring placards, regardless of vehicle weight.
Age Requirements
Arkansas follows both state and federal age requirements for CDL licensing:
- 18 years old: Minimum age for intrastate CDL operation (within Arkansas only)
- 21 years old: Required for interstate commerce, HazMat endorsement, or passenger transport in interstate commerce
Drivers aged 18-20 receive an intrastate-only restriction on their CDL, limiting them to Arkansas operations only.

Medical Requirements
All Arkansas CDL applicants must meet federal DOT medical standards:
- DOT Physical Examination: Required from a certified medical examiner on the National Registry
- Medical Examiner's Certificate (Form MCSA-5876): Must be current and valid
- Medical Examination Report (Form MCSA-5875): Completed by the examiner
- Self-Certification: Declare your type of commercial driving operation
Medical certificates are typically valid for up to 24 months but may be shorter if the examiner identifies conditions requiring more frequent monitoring. Failure to maintain a current medical certificate can result in CDL downgrade or disqualification.
Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT)
Arkansas complies with federal ELDT requirements that took effect February 7, 2022. You must complete ELDT from an FMCSA-approved provider before taking skills tests for:
- Class A CDL
- Class B CDL
- Passenger (P) endorsement
- School Bus (S) endorsement
- Hazardous Materials (H) knowledge test
ELDT includes both theory (classroom/online) instruction and behind-the-wheel training for applicable license classes and endorsements.
Knowledge Tests
Arkansas requires passing specific knowledge tests based on your desired CDL class and endorsements:
Required for All CDL Classes
- General Knowledge: Basic commercial driving principles and safety
Additional Tests by Class/Endorsement
- Air Brakes: Required for vehicles equipped with air brake systems
- Combination Vehicles: Required for Class A CDL
- Passenger Transport (P): For passenger vehicle operation
- School Bus (S): For school bus operation (requires P endorsement)
- Tank Vehicle (N): For liquid or gas tank vehicles
- Hazardous Materials (H): For transporting hazardous materials
- Doubles/Triples (T): For pulling multiple trailers
All tests are computer-based and administered at Arkansas State Police trooper exam stations statewide.
Skills Testing
The Arkansas CDL skills test consists of three parts:
- Pre-Trip Vehicle Inspection: Demonstrate knowledge of vehicle safety inspection procedures
- Basic Vehicle Control Skills: Maneuvering exercises in a controlled environment
- On-Road Driving Test: Safe operation in traffic conditions
You must hold a Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) for at least 14 days before taking the skills test and provide a representative vehicle for your desired CDL class.

Arkansas DMV
Medical Requirements
All Arkansas CDL applicants must pass a DOT physical examination conducted by a certified medical examiner listed on the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners. The examination must result in a Medical Examiner's Certificate (Form MCSA-5876) and Medical Examination Report (Form MCSA-5875). Applicants must also complete self-certification declaring their type of commercial driving operation. Medical certificates are typically valid for up to 24 months but may be shorter if the examiner identifies conditions requiring more frequent monitoring. Failure to maintain a current medical certificate when required can result in CDL downgrade or disqualification.
