Kansas CDL Overview

Kansas commercial driver's licenses are issued through the Kansas Department of Revenue (KDOR) Division of Vehicles. All Kansas CDL holders must comply with both federal FMCSA regulations and Kansas-specific requirements. The state follows the federal CDL framework while implementing additional state requirements for commercial drivers.

Age Requirements

Kansas follows federal age minimums for commercial driving:

  • Age 18: Eligible for Class A, B, or C CDL for intrastate driving only
  • Age 21: Required for interstate driving, hazardous materials transport, or passenger/school bus operations

The age requirement applies to all CDL classes equally - there are no different age thresholds based on whether you're seeking a Class A, B, or C license.

Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) Requirements

Before obtaining your Kansas CDL, you must first get a Commercial Instruction Permit (CIP), also known as a Commercial Learner's Permit:

  • Fee: Approximately $13
  • Minimum holding period: 14 days before skills test eligibility
  • Supervision requirement: Must be accompanied by qualified CDL holder in front seat
  • Testing: Must pass all required knowledge tests

CLP Restrictions

While holding your CLP, you must:

  • Be accompanied by a qualified CDL holder with proper class and endorsements
  • Have the supervising driver seated in the front seat
  • Only operate on public roads under supervision

Knowledge Test Requirements

Kansas requires passing scores on knowledge tests based on the Kansas Commercial Driver's License Manual. Required tests depend on your intended CDL class and endorsements.

Core Knowledge Tests

  • General Knowledge: Required for all CDL classes
  • Combination Vehicles: Required for Class A CDL
  • Air Brakes: Required if vehicle has air brakes

Endorsement Knowledge Tests

  • Tank Vehicles (N): Special handling and surge characteristics
  • Doubles/Triples (T): Multi-trailer operations
  • Passenger (P): Passenger transport safety
  • School Bus (S): Student transportation (requires P endorsement first)
  • Hazardous Materials (H): Hazmat transport and placarding

Study Topics

Key study areas include:

  • Vehicle inspection procedures
  • Basic vehicle control and shifting
  • Speed and space management
  • Hazard awareness and emergency situations
  • Cargo securement
  • Coupling and uncoupling procedures
  • Air brake system operation
  • Special vehicle characteristics (tanks, combinations, passenger vehicles)

Skills Test Requirements

After holding your CLP for at least 14 days, you can schedule your CDL skills test. The test consists of three parts that must be completed in sequence:

Three-Part Skills Test

  1. Pre-trip Vehicle Inspection: Demonstrate knowledge of vehicle systems and safety checks
  2. Basic Vehicle Control: Backing, turning, and maneuvering in controlled environment
  3. On-road Driving: Real-world driving including intersections, curves, and lane changes

Vehicle Requirements

You must provide a vehicle that:

  • Matches the CDL class you're testing for
  • Has the same brake system (air brakes if you want air brake privileges)
  • Represents any endorsements you're seeking
  • Is properly licensed and insured

Important: Testing with the wrong vehicle type will result in restrictions on your CDL.
