Age Requirements for Kentucky CDL

Kentucky follows federal age minimums with provisions for intrastate operation at 18. The specific age requirements depend on your intended use:

  • 18 years old: Eligible for Class A CDL, Class B CDL, or Class C CDL for intrastate operation only (within Kentucky borders)
  • 21 years old: Required for interstate commerce, passenger transport, hazardous materials, and most endorsements

All CDL classes follow the same age pattern - you can obtain any class at 18 for intrastate use, but must be 21 for interstate operations and most specialized endorsements.

Knowledge Test Requirements

All Kentucky CDL applicants must pass written knowledge tests administered at KYTC regional offices. The required tests depend on your license class and desired endorsements:

Required Tests for All Applicants

  • General Knowledge: Covers CDL laws, vehicle inspection, basic control, shifting, speed management, space management, and emergency procedures

Additional Tests by License Class

  • Class A CDL: Combination Vehicles test (mandatory)
  • Air Brakes: Required if your vehicle has air brakes (all classes)

Endorsement Tests

  • Passenger (P): For vehicles carrying 16+ passengers
  • School Bus (S): Required in addition to P endorsement
  • Tank Vehicle (N): For liquid or gas tankers
  • Hazardous Materials (H): Includes TSA background check
  • Doubles/Triples (T): For multiple trailer combinations
  • Tank + HazMat (X): Combines N and H requirements

You must score at least 80% on each test. Study materials are available in the official Kentucky CDL Manual.

Skills Test Requirements

Kentucky State Police administers the three-part CDL skills test. You must hold a Commercial Learner's Permit (CLP) for at least 14 days before testing.

Three-Part Skills Test

  1. Pre-Trip Inspection: Demonstrate knowledge of safety-critical vehicle components and proper inspection procedures
  2. Basic Vehicle Control: Perform backing maneuvers including straight line backing, offset backing, and either alley dock or parallel parking
  3. On-Road Driving: Navigate real traffic conditions including lane changes, turns, intersections, expressways, and railroad crossings

Vehicle Requirements

You must provide a representative vehicle that:

  • Matches the CDL class you're testing for
  • Has current registration and insurance
  • Is in safe operating condition
  • Contains any special equipment for endorsements (e.g., air brakes, passenger seating)

Failure on any segment requires retesting and paying the skills test fee again.

Medical Requirements

Kentucky requires all CDL applicants to meet Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) medical standards. You must:

  • Obtain a DOT Physical: From an FMCSA-certified medical examiner listed in the National Registry
  • Complete Required Forms: Medical Examination Report (MCSA-5875) and Medical Examiner's Certificate (MCSA-5876)
  • Self-Certify: Declare your type of driving operation (interstate vs. intrastate, exempt vs. non-exempt)
  • Pass Vision Exam: Administered at KSP testing locations or licensing offices

Your medical certificate must remain current throughout your CDL validity period. Failure to maintain medical certification will result in CDL privilege downgrade to a regular driver's license.

Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT)

Kentucky enforces federal ELDT requirements effective February 7, 2022. You must complete ELDT from an FMCSA-registered training provider before testing if you are:

  • Obtaining a Class A or Class B CDL for the first time
  • Upgrading from Class B to Class A
  • Adding Hazardous Materials (H), Passenger (P), or School Bus (S) endorsements for the first time

Training Components

  • Theory Training: Required for all covered licenses and endorsements
  • Behind-the-Wheel (BTW): Required for Class A, Class B, Passenger, and School Bus

Training completion must be electronically transmitted to FMCSA's Training Provider Registry before you can schedule your skills test.

Testing Locations and Scheduling

Knowledge Tests and CLP

Written tests are conducted at KYTC regional driver licensing offices throughout Kentucky. You can typically schedule online through Drive.ky.gov or visit an office directly. Check specific office policies for walk-in availability.

Skills Tests

CDL skills tests are administered exclusively by Kentucky State Police at designated testing locations. Key requirements:

  • Appointment-only scheduling through KSP's online system
  • Must hold CLP for at least 14 days
  • ELDT completion must be verified in FMCSA system
  • Bring representative vehicle with proper documentation

Popular testing locations include Lexington, Louisville, and various KSP regional posts. Schedule early as appointments fill quickly, especially for Class A testing.

  • Skills and knowledge tests are generally waived for valid transfers
  • HazMat endorsements require new testing and TSA assessment

Kentucky State Police conduct warrant and background checks as part of the CDL application process.

Drug and Alcohol Testing

CDL holders are subject to DOT drug and alcohol testing requirements including:

  • Pre-employment testing
