Medical Requirements
All New Jersey CDL applicants must obtain a Medical Examiner's Certificate (MEC) from a National Registry certified medical examiner. The DOT physical examination covers vision standards (20/40 or better with/without correction), hearing ability (forced whisper test at 5 feet), blood pressure (generally below 140/90), cardiovascular health, diabetes control, neurological conditions, and substance abuse history. Standard certification is valid for up to 24 months, though shorter periods may be required for certain medical conditions. Medical certification must be maintained throughout the CDL validity period, and failure to maintain current certification can result in CDL downgrade or disqualification.
