  • Obtaining your first School Bus (S), Passenger (P), or HazMat (H) endorsement

ELDT Requirements

  • Training must be from an FMCSA-approved provider listed in the Training Provider Registry
  • Complete ELDT before your skills test (recommended before written tests)
  • Both theory and behind-the-wheel instruction required

Knowledge Test Requirements

Testing Process

All knowledge tests are conducted at Service Oklahoma Licensing Offices. You must pass:

  • General CDL knowledge test for your class
  • Any required endorsement tests
  • Vision screening

Test Topics Covered

Based on the Oklahoma Commercial Driver Manual, test topics include:

  • General Knowledge: Vehicle control, space management, speed, emergencies
  • Air Brakes: System components, dual air brakes, inspection procedures
  • Combination Vehicles: Coupling/uncoupling, rollover prevention, inspections
  • Passenger Transport: Bus safety, loading/unloading procedures
  • HazMat: Placarding, shipping papers, security requirements
  • School Bus: Student safety, railroad crossings, emergency procedures

Skills Test (Road Test) Requirements

After obtaining your Commercial Learner Permit (CLP), you must wait 14 full days before taking the skills test.

Three-Part Skills Test

  1. Pre-Trip Inspection: Demonstrate knowledge of vehicle components and safety checks
  2. Basic Control Skills: Backing, turning, offset, and alley-dock maneuvers
  3. On-Road Driving: City and highway driving, lane changes, turns, railroad crossings

Vehicle Requirements: You must test in a representative vehicle for your desired class and endorsements. Testing in a vehicle without air brakes will result in an air brake restriction.

Medical Certification Requirements

Oklahoma follows federal self-certification categories. You must determine your operation type:

Self-Certification Categories

  • Non-Excepted Interstate (NI): DOT medical card required for licensing
  • Excepted Interstate: Medical card not required for licensing
  • Non-Excepted Intrastate: Medical card not required for licensing
  • Excepted Intrastate: Medical card not required for licensing

Medical Examiner's Certificate (DOT Physical): If required, must be obtained from a Certified Medical Examiner listed on FMCSA's National Registry.

CDL Endorsements

Oklahoma offers standard federal endorsements with state-specific testing requirements:

Available Endorsements

  • H - HazMat: Requires knowledge test, TSA background check, and fingerprinting
  • N - Tank Vehicles: Tank-specific knowledge test required
  • P - Passenger: Required for vehicles designed for 16+ passengers
  • S - School Bus: Requires P endorsement plus additional testing and ELDT
  • T - Doubles/Triples: Knowledge test for double/triple trailers

HazMat endorsements require additional background checks through the Department of Homeland Security.

Testing Locations and Scheduling

Knowledge Tests

Conducted at Service Oklahoma Licensing Offices throughout the state. Use the office locator on Oklahoma.gov to find locations and hours.

Skills Tests

Available at:

  • State CDL test sites
  • Authorized third-party examiners

Schedule your road test directly with third-party examiners or through the state's CDL testing system.

Reciprocity and Transfers

Oklahoma participates in the federal CDL program, providing full reciprocity:

  • Oklahoma CDLs are valid in all U.S. states and D.C.
  • Out-of-state CDL holders can transfer to Oklahoma
  • Transfer requirements may include vision testing and medical certification
  • HazMat endorsements require new background checks

Oklahoma-Specific Requirements

RV Exception

Oklahoma has a narrow recreational vehicle exception. RVs are exempt from CDL requirements only if used solely for family or personal recreation, not business purposes.

Intrastate Operations

Drivers aged 18-20 may operate CDL vehicles within Oklahoma only. Interstate operation and HazMat endorsements require age 21.
