Washington CDL Overview
The Washington State Department of Licensing (DOL) administers Commercial Driver License (CDL) programs following federal FMCSA regulations. Whether you're pursuing a Class A CDL for tractor-trailers, Class B for buses and large trucks, or Class C for smaller commercial vehicles, Washington offers comprehensive testing and licensing services.
Age Requirements
Washington follows federal age standards with important distinctions between intrastate and interstate driving:
- 18 years old: Minimum age for Class A, B, or C CDL for intrastate (Washington-only) commercial driving
- 21 years old: Required for interstate (state-to-state) commercial driving and hazardous materials endorsements
Drivers aged 18-20 will receive an intrastate restriction that's removed automatically at age 21.

- Shifting, speed, and space management
- Adverse condition driving
- Cargo securement and weight distribution
- Passenger transport regulations (P/S endorsements)

Skills Test Requirements
After holding a CLP for at least 14 days, applicants must pass a three-part skills test administered by DOL-certified third-party testers:
Test Components
- Pre-trip Inspection: Demonstrate ability to inspect critical safety systems including brakes, steering, tires, lights, and coupling devices
- Basic Vehicle Control: Complete backing exercises such as straight line, offset, and alley dock maneuvers
- On-road Driving: Navigate city and highway driving scenarios including lane changes, turns, intersections, and railroad crossings
You must test in a vehicle representative of your desired CDL class and endorsements to avoid restrictions.
Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT)
Washington follows federal ELDT requirements effective February 7, 2022. Training is mandatory for:
- First-time Class A or B CDL
- Upgrading from Class B to Class A
- First-time P, S, or H endorsements
ELDT Requirements
- Complete theory and behind-the-wheel instruction from an FMCSA-approved provider
- Provider must electronically submit completion to the Training Provider Registry
- Training completion required before skills testing
Many Washington community colleges offer ELDT-compliant programs, often with workforce development funding available.
Medical Certification
All CDL holders must meet federal medical standards unless specifically exempt. Requirements include:
- DOT physical exam by FMCSA-certified medical examiner
- Medical Examiner's Certificate (typically valid up to 24 months)
- Self-certification of driving type with DOL
- Maintain current medical certificate on file
Important: Expired medical certificates can result in CDL downgrade to regular license.
Testing Locations and Scheduling
Knowledge Tests

Washington DMV
Medical Requirements
All CDL applicants must pass a DOT physical examination conducted by an FMCSA-certified medical examiner. The medical certificate is typically valid for up to 24 months but may be shorter based on medical conditions. Applicants must self-certify their type of commercial driving and maintain a current medical certificate on file with DOL. Failure to maintain valid medical certification can result in CDL downgrade to a regular driver license.
